Pool Chemicals Explained for Homeowners
Why Pool Chemistry Matters
Pool water isn't just water with a bit of chlorine. It's a carefully balanced chemical system. When the balance is right, the water is safe, clear, and comfortable to swim in. When it's wrong, you get problems — green water, cloudy water, skin irritation, damaged equipment, or worse. Understanding the basics helps you appreciate what your pool service does and why it matters.
Chlorine: Your Primary Disinfectant
Chlorine kills bacteria, viruses, and algae in pool water. It's the most important chemical in your pool. In Spain's heat, chlorine gets used up fast — UV light destroys it, high temperatures reduce its effectiveness, and bather load consumes it. Maintaining adequate free chlorine (1-3 ppm) is essential. This is why weekly testing and adjustment is so important.
pH: The Master Controller
pH measures how acidic or alkaline your water is, on a scale from 0 to 14. Pool water should be kept between 7.2 and 7.6. Too low (acidic) and the water corrodes equipment and irritates skin. Too high (alkaline) and chlorine becomes ineffective, scale builds up, and water goes cloudy. pH naturally drifts upward in most pools, so regular adjustment is needed.
Alkalinity: The pH Buffer
Total alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH — it helps keep pH stable. If alkalinity is too low, pH will bounce around unpredictably. If it's too high, pH becomes hard to lower. We aim for 80-120 ppm. Getting alkalinity right makes everything else easier to manage.
Other Chemicals You Might Encounter
Cyanuric acid (stabiliser) protects chlorine from UV destruction — important in sunny Spain. Algaecide provides extra protection against algae growth. Flocculant helps clear cloudy water by clumping fine particles so the filter can catch them. pH minus (acid) and pH plus (soda ash) are used to adjust pH levels. All of these are included in our standard maintenance plans.
Leave It to the Professionals
You don't need to become a pool chemist. That's our job. But understanding the basics helps you spot problems early and appreciate why regular professional testing and adjustment keeps your pool safe and enjoyable.
